The "Big Four" in a Feed Mill – What Do They Actually Do?

1. The Crusher (Grinder) – Like a Coffee Grinder

It takes whole grains like maize, sorghum, and soybeans and breaks them into fine powder. Why? Because animals digest powder more easily than whole grains, and it also makes the next step – mixing – much more even. Think of it like grinding coffee beans before you make coffee.

2. The Mixer – Like a Cake Batter Mixer

Now we have different powders: maize meal, soybean meal, vitamins, minerals. The mixer blends them all thoroughly so that every single bite of feed has the same nutrition. No lumps, no uneven parts. Just like mixing flour, eggs, and sugar for a perfect cake.

3. The Pellet Mill – Like a Pasta Maker

The mixed powder is pressed through small holes under high pressure and heat to form hard, dry pellets. Why pellets? They are denser, take up less space, produce less dust, and animals love them. It's like turning loose flour into noodles – same ingredients, better shape.

4. The Cooler – Like a Fan for Fresh Bread

Pellets come out hot and wet from the pellet mill. If you pack them immediately, they will go bad or break. The cooler blows air through them to bring down the temperature and moisture. After cooling, they become hard and stable, ready for storage or transport – just like cooling cookies on a rack.
